Edgar F. (Ed) Erb of Crest Hill Illinois, formerly a long time Vassar resident, died on Monday, December 5, 2011 at his daughter's home in Crest Hill, Illinois. Ed was born in Mayville on September 20, 1912 to Lloyd and Arminda Erb. He graduated from Flint Central High School. He married Leola Wall in Mayville on June 20, 1936. They had three children, David, Diane and DeLynn. DeLynn died soon after birth.
Ed bought a grocery store, Erb's Food Shop, in Vassar in 1937 and sold it in 1955. He knew most of his customers by name and often the kind of meat they usually purchased. In 1955, he went to work for the Eaton Corporation in the Personnel Department, retiring from Eaton in 1974.
He served in the community in many ways. He was a founding board member of Teen Ranch and also of the Cass River Gideon camp. Ed served on the School Board and was a member of the Vassar Rotary Club for many years.
He was active in the Vassar First Baptist Church in a variety of roles. His Christian faith was an important dimension of his life, and he was eager to express his faith in service to the church.
After the death of Leola on February 3, 1999, on November 11, 2000, Ed married Hilda Blasius. Hilda died in 2004.
Ed is survived by his children, David (Marty) and Diane Pedersen (Gerry), six grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by Hilda's children, Carolyn Baldwin (Chuck), Val Blasius (Mary Lou), and Paula St Clair (Mark), six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, six great step grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren and eight great, great step grandchildren.
Ed is preceded in death by his siblings Everett Erb, Norine Giguere, and Eulah Mason as well as a great grandchild, Devin Erb. Ed's funeral service were held on Monday, December 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Vassar. The burial followed at the Riverside Cemetery in Vassar. Pastor Dave Somers delivered the funeral message and closing prayers at the cemetery.
