Mr. Douglas Oprea

Douglas L. (Doug) Oprea of Millington formerly of Vassar passed away suddenly Friday January 4, 2013 at his Millington residence, Doug was 66.

Born in Saginaw MI on May 2nd 1946 Doug was the son of the late George & Reta (Sevener) Oprea and grew up in Vassar where he graduated from the Vassar High School Class of 1964. He went on to Ferris State University and graduated with an Associate's Degree. Doug for a brief time worked in the Vassar Foundry and eventually after college went to work for General Motors Buick - Flint Division, and retired after 37 ½ years. Doug started with GM as a draftsman and he retired as a draftsman supervisor. Doug also served our country during the Vietnam War in the Us-Army 101st Airborne stationed out of Fort Benning Georgia. While serving he was award the Bronze Star, and other prestigious metals of conduct. On April 22, 1967 Doug married Miss Norma Jean Babion his loving wife of 45 years. Doug had a passion for bowling. In November of 2004 he was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. He bowled in many leagues throughout the area, in Vassar (Hill Top Bowling once owned by his uncle Willie and aunt Edie Oprea), Mayville Bowling, Caro Bowling, Candle Light Lanes in Bridge Port MI, Doug also served on many Bowling Boards of Association. Doug also loved gardening, playing golf, wood working, and rebuilding old Case tractors. He also was a very active member of the East Arbela Church of Christ. Doug served his Lord and his church,he served as a church trustee for many years. Doug left us suddenly and he will be greatly missed. His warm smile and his always ready to help where ever and whoever will be missed by many.

Doug leaves to cherish his wonderful memories, wife Norma, daughter Jill R. Oprea son and daughter in-law Joe &Laura Oprea, two grandchildren, Isaac & Violet Oprea, also his siblings, sister and brother in-law Virginia & John Starkel, sister Ann Gee, brother and sister in-law Craig & Shannon Oprea, and sister and brother in-law Heather & Bernie Deneke, his extended family Mike & Betty Babion, Judy & Ronnie Couch, and Carol Howard, several nieces, nephews, other extended family and many friends. Besides his parents Doug is preceded in death also by his mother & father in-law Beatrice & Don Babion, sister in-law Pat Barnes, and brothers in-law Chuck Howard and Bob Gee, uncle Andy, uncle Willie & aunt Edie Oprea, aunt Rose Baxter and cousin John Oprea,uncles John & Tony Oprea.

Service Information

Funeral services for Doug were held on Tuesday January 8, 2013 at the East Arbela Church of Christ. The burial followed at the Riverside Cemetery in Vassar, cemetery services were concluded with Military Honors conducted by the Conrad-Wager & Keene American Legion Post #164 of Millington.
