Mr. Donald Hugh Haines of Arbela Twp. passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 while at the Lutheran Home in Frankenmuth, MI. Don was 86.
Donald Hugh Haines was born in Arbela Twp. On February 7, 1925 and was the son of Howard and Mary (Findon) Haines. Don has been a lifelong resident of the Arbela Twp. and Millington areas. On October 8, 1949 Don married Barbara Geyer. They celebrated 33 years of marriage before her passing on November 9, 1982. On June 26, 1984 Don married Mary E. (Welsh) Rogers and together they celebrated 26 years of marriage. Don was retired from General Motors Swartz Creek Parts Plant with 28 years of employment. Don also owned and operated the Haines farm for many years. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served at one time on the St. Paul Board of Education. Don was also a very active member of the Millington - Arbela Historical Society and also served his community on the Arbela Twp. Board. Don was an avid sports fan. He ran the score clock, kept statistics, and coached youth basketball at St. Paul for many years. Many of Don's favorite times were spent fishing, playing cards, traveling, and visiting with family and friends. Don's real passion in life was his family and being involved with them in every possible way. His warm and friendly smile will live on in each of their hearts forever.
Don leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Mary, children; Larry and Beth Haines, Lori and Steve Buchinger, Kevin and Brenda Haines, Kirk and Cindy Haines, Julie and John Cupp, Bill Rogers, and Kay and Denny Bolen, grandchildren; Nathan, Stephanie, Trent, Tyler, Sarah, Rachel, Seth, Chris, Renee', Andrew, John, and Dennis; and also 9 great-grandchildren. Don leaves his sister and brother in-law; Marlene and Duane McCurdy, brothers in-law and sisters in-law; Eldon and Sherry Geyer, Mary Geyer, and John and Ruth Engels and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends. The funeral services were held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on Wednesday February 16, 2011. The burial followed at the Newton Cemetery in Arbela township. Pastor James Bruner delivered the funeral message and the closing prayers at the cemetery. Memorial Gifts of Remembrance can be given to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Gym, or to the Millington - Arbela Historical Society.
