Howard Benton

Howard Roy Benton, 77, of Millington Michigan passed away in Ocala Florida on October 31, 2019 due to complications from cancer.

He was born February 7, 1942 in Millington, Michigan, the son of the late Frank and Dorothy (Hoard) Benton.  He was a graduate of Millington High School and received his Bachelors and Master’s degrees from Central Michigan University. He was a teacher and a counselor in the Lapeer Public Schools for over 30 years.  In addition to teaching he coached cross country, track and wrestling.  He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Above all he was a devoted family man travelling extensively with his children and then his grandchildren, always excited to explore something new or share an old favorite.

On November 4, 1961 he was united in marriage to Eleanor Ruth Snell in the Millington Church of the Nazarene.  Howard is survived by his wife; his children Virginia Benton (Bernadette Phelan) and Shelley (Geoff) Stuart; his grandchildren Michael and Amanda Stuart; his sister Roberta (Richard) Lumsden; his brother-in-law Wilbert (Sue) Ill and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; his son Howard Dean Benton and his sisters Barb Ill and Elaine (Jim) Snyder.

Visitation on Thursday November 7, 2019 will be held at Hanlin Funeral Home, 4823 Main Street, Millington, Michigan from 2:00pm to 7:00pm.  Visitation on Friday November 8, 2019, will be at Richfield Church of the Nazarene (where Howard was an active member), 2574 E. Mt. Morris Road, Otisville, Michigan from 10:00am to 11:00am with the funeral service starting at 11:00am.

The family will host a luncheon (to follow internment at Stiles Cemetery) at Mayfield Township Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw Street, Lapeer, Michigan.
