Greg passed away suddenly Tuesday March 12, 2013 while in Florida.
Gregory Lee Hancock was born in Highland Park, Michigan, to Floyd and Ruth Hancock on August 30th, 1947. The second of six children, Greg grew up in the woods and cedar swamps around Murphy Lake in Millington, MI. A lover of adventure who never grew up, Greg was a devoted husband and a dedicated father. He married a "girl from town," Marilyn Hancock (Sherman). Greg was a strong support for his large family of dozens of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law.
After graduating from Millington High School in 1966 and before meeting his future wife, Greg served his country in the US Navy from 1966-1970 in Vietnam. After returning from overseas, Greg and Marilyn married in 1973 and had four children together. Greg worked 25 years as an electrical contractor with Henkels & McCoy, an engineering and construction firm, and retired in autumn of 2009. In his tragically short retirement, there can be no doubt that Greg had more adventures than most spread over several decades, always accompanied by his adoring wife Marilyn.
Greg was a voracious reader and a lover of movie time with his family. His attention to detail was most apparent when putting together model sailing ships, endeavors spread over months and years. Greg always loved the water, from growing up on Murphy Lake and building his own sailing ship dubbed the Miss Murphy to his final days fishing, swimming, and snorkeling among the Florida Keys. A traveler at heart, Greg had recently visited the Mediterranean Sea and toured Southern Europe and Turkey. Greg's closest companions on his and Marilyn's most recent trip to the Florida Keys were Marilyn's sister Helen and her husband Dan Porter, who will always have his family's gratitude for being with him in his ultimate hour of need.
Greg will be missed terribly, but he has been reunited with his Lord and his first son. His family and friends will always remember how young he was at heart, how he never stood in judgment over anyone, and always knew the best time to play hide-and-go-seek or kick-the-can.
Greg leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Marilyn, three children, Lori and husband Kevin Smith, Michael & wife Teresa Hancock-Parmer, Becky Hancock (Trent Middleton), grandchildren; Breaunna, Cameron, Brandon, and Jansamal. Greg also leaves his mother Mrs. Ruth Hancock, his siblings, two brothers Charles and Arch (Floyd), three sisters Kris, Kari and Becky. Greg is preceded in death by a son Greggy in 1981 and his father Floyd Hancock in 2012.
