Mr. Erwin R. Proctor of Vassar, Michigan passed away suddenly Friday afternoon April 20, 2018 at his home in Vassar. Erwin was 82.
The son of the late Marlon and Florence (Bennett) Proctor, Erwin was born on January 3, 1936 in Clio, Michigan. After high school Erwin went into the US Army and served six and one half years between the Korean and Vietnam Wars. On November 29, 1958 Erwin married Miss Patricia Hollingsworth. Together he and Pat have celebrated 59 years of marriage. After Erwin returned from the Army his thoughts were to become a Michigan State Police Officer; however, he decided against that particular career choice. Erwin then went to work in the shipping and receiving department for Buick Motor Division in Flint and retired after 38 years. Erwin worked throughout his life at various other jobs; including 33 years delivering bottled gas for Ferrell Gas of Millington. He also drove bus for the Millington Public Schools as well as worked for the Half-Way Truck Stop Gas Station in Vassar. Shortly after retirement, he went to work for Hanlin Funeral Home assisting with the car maintenance and eventually started helping with funerals. Erwin was a member of UAW Local 599 and a member of the Conrad-Wager & Keene American Legion Post 164 of Millington. Erwin loved playing golf, working in his wood shop building a variety of things from shelves, to bird houses, and more. And, if it was broke; Erwin could usually fix it. Erwin and Pat are active members of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Frankenmuth.
Erwin leaves behind his wife Pat and four daughters, Bev Ankley of Lapeer, Bonni (John) Krol of Chesterfield Township, Lisa (Brent) Roeglin of Frankenmuth, and Dawn (Mark) Schoenow of Vassar. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a brother, Flett Proctor, a sister, Janet (John) Hampel, a sister-in-law, Norma Proctor and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Erwin is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Welcome, Guy, and George, two sister-in-law’s Sharon and Betty, and a niece Holly Wren.
The Proctor family will receive family and friends at the Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington on Tuesday April 24, 2018 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Erwin will lie in-state at the Blessed Trinity Catholic Church (958 E. Tuscola St., Frankenmuth, MI 48734) beginning at 9:00 am followed by a mass at 10:00 am. Military Honors will be conducted by the Conrad-Wager & Keene American Legion Post 164 of Millington. After the service concludes, the family will honor Erwin’s request and cremation will take place. A private burial of his urn will take place at a later date. Memorial Gifts of Remembrance can be directed to the Blessed Trinity Catholic Church or charity of your choice.
