Charles Jarvis Hanlin, a lifetime Millington resident passed away late Thursday afternoon November 21, 2019 at the age of 89.
Jarvis was born on September 12, 1930 in Millington, Michigan, the son of the late William “Bill” and Florence (Conner) Hanlin. He was raised in Millington and was commonly known as Jarvis, although around the workplace he went by Chuck. Even fewer knew that his given name was Charles.
Jarvis attended and graduated from Millington High School in 1949. While in school, he was active in baseball and basketball. Upon graduation he worked for a short time alongside his parents in the day-to-day operation of Hanlin Funeral Home. However, he decided not to pursue a career in the funeral service profession. Jarvis enlisted into the U.S. Army Reserves in November 1950. Several times he was close to deployment during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the Army in September 1956 and returned to Millington. Upon his return, Jarvis found a lifelong career in the retail grocery business and retired in 1996 after 35 years.
On October 4, 1952, Jarvis married his high school sweet-heart Ardith “Ardie” Marie Gilchrist, and together they celebrated 48 years together, before her passing in 1999. In their younger years, Jarvis and Ardie loved playing golf and spent many memorable Monday nights and weekends at the Willow Springs Golf Course. He and Ardie also loved to dance, and others loved to watch them glide around the floor. They were often referred to as the “Fred and Ginger of Millington”.
Jarvis was a true Millington Cardinal fan, he rarely missed a football game, and was often found at the north end of the field amongst the “North End Quarterbacks”, cheering on the Cardinals, and hashing out the game play-by-play. Additionally, Jarvis was passionate about hunting; he grew up in the era when pheasants were plentiful in the Millington area. He, like many others, treated the opening day of pheasant season as a national holiday.
He is forever loved by his three sons: Mark (Angela) Hanlin, Dale (Pamela) Hanlin, and Dean Hanlin. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Melissa (Ben) Ahlersmeyer, Stephanie (Matt) Staneck, and Amy Hanlin and fiancé (Nick Malchodi). Two great-grandsons, Noah Staneck and Seth Ahlersmeyer. Fond uncle to his nieces, nephews, and loving extended family.
In addition to his wife and parents, Jarvis is preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Jerry and Marion Hanlin, Betty and Tom Jolly. Jarvis’s in-laws: Don and Pat Gilchrist, and Ed and Ardie Gilchrist, and nephew Jerry M. Hanlin
