Bernd (Ben) Allendorfer Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 23rd, 2023. He was 77 years old.
Ben was born August 19th, 1946 to Fritz and Irmgard Allendorfer in Wiesbaden, Germany. He came to the United States in 1959, where he met the love of his life, Connie McPherson. They were married on March 20th, 1965 and had 57 wonderful years together. He was a dedicated employee of General Motors at the Buick City plant in Flint, and retired in 2000 after 35 years of service.
Ben would often refer to himself as a “jack of all trades, master of none”, but his family knew him as their hero who was always there to lend a helping hand. He put others before himself, and always made sure those around him felt welcomed and loved. His home was a central gathering place, always filled with family, food, and love. The sound of his grandchildren’s footsteps and laughter brought joy to his heart and a smile to his face. When the TV was on, you’d likely find a Dallas Cowboys or Michigan Wolverines game on or the sounds of outlaw country music playing. While family was number one in his heart, he also enjoyed his early-morning cups of coffee, Hershey’s chocolate bars, eagle watching, and traveling with Connie looking at lighthouses. They were often joined by close friends, Tom and Lois Anglin, in their adventures. Together with his loving wife, kids, and grandkids, he created many memories and strong family traditions.
People in town knew Ben and his love for his German Shepherds, a dog breed known for their loyalty, faithfulness, and devotion. These are all characteristics that were shared by Ben. He honored his German heritage by using the same first letter when naming all of his five children, cooking authentic family dishes, watching soccer, and always counting in German. His and Connie’s favorite time of year was Christmas, when they celebrated St. Nick’s Day, sang Silent Night with their grandchildren, cut down and decorated a real tree, and dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Ben is survived by his children: Barb (Mike) deCheubel, Bonnie (Ed) Roesner, Ben (Tonya) Allendorfer, and Brandon (Tara) Allendorfer; son-in-law, Mike Jackett; grandchildren: Steven Gruehn, Azurah (Billy) Karl, Tyler (Brianna) Sweers, Troy deCheubel, Andrew (Danielle) Jackett, Emily (Devin) McDowell, Bradley Allendorfer, Lucas Jackett, Karsten Allendorfer, and Blaine Allendorfer; great grandchildren, Grayson Sweers and Elliott Jackett; sibling, Daniela; friend and caregiver, Stacie Ward.
Ben is preceded in death by his wife, Connie (McPherson) Allendorfer; daughter, Becky Jackett; parents, Fritz and Irmgard Allendorfer.
